Ever see the movie Working Girl?


There's a scene near the end when Melanie Griffith's character shows how she came up with her idea of a merger by reading the latest news. In this case, it was the social page. The message was: stay current.


Now while staying current doesn't necessarily mean being ahead of the curve on what fashions are hot for next season, it does mean keeping up on the latest developments in technology, economics, politics, labor, market trends and globalization, as well as industry news in order to understand the impact on the business world in general and each organization specifically.


Savvy employees know the importance of staying abreast of current events and therefore, learn as much as they can about the world around them in order to develop the skills that will advance their career. What skills are those?

Critical thinking

Critical thinking provides employees with the skill to solve potential workplace issues by providing them with the ability to think independently, analyze situations, compare and contrast potential solutions and formulate potential conclusions.


Creative thinking skills lead to innovation, new insights, novel approaches, fresh perspectives, and whole new ways of understanding and conceiving of things. Creativity helps in strategizing plans, designing new products, imagining new opportunities, and thinking up new ways to do the same old thing.


Reading has been known to enhance vocabulary and the ability to communicate intelligently. Therefore, reading about current events provides employees with a broader understanding of words and the ability to express thoughts in a more clever and cohesive manner.


When an employee understands what is going on in the world around him and how organizations operate, it says a lot about who he is, gives him an edge on the competition and enhances his personal branding. Being aware of the latest technological trends, changes in the political climate, or fluctuations in the economic market can have a major impact on an organization. It can drive decision-making.


For instance, if a company is planning to open operations in another city or country, or if legislature is in the works that may positively or negatively impact organizational operations, or if a new way of communicating is about to hit the market, this information can influence the way business leaders do business and the choices that the executive team will make not just for tomorrow but for months and years to come.


Employees who want to advance their career and play a critical role in the decision-making process need to understand how changes in the world at large impact their own organization. So what's the best way to do this?


Staying on top of current events is a matter of identifying sources that provide the best up-to-date information on current events and news. Trade publications and the associations that support them are a great way to get industry-specific information. News outlets – CNN.com, MSN.com, WallStreetJournal.com -- are now available on-line and in print. Up-to-date news reports can be received on cell phones and other hand-held technology. 


Whatever the topic or news story there is a source available for career savvy employees to tune in and stay connected. It's just a matter of making a choice to stay current on current events.
